The best Northumberland hotels for your 2021 getaway

Northumberland is a wild and sprawling corner of England, so accommodation choices are important. Here is our pick of the best Northumberland hotels for your perfect 2021 vacation.

As one of the largest and most remote counties in England, choosing the best Northumberland accommodation is no easy task. Dominated by wild and barren landscapes, blessed with barely-visited beaches and enchanted by lush green forests, there is a corner of Northumberland that caters to a diverse range of scenic tastes.

From the Scottish border in the north to Tyneside in the south, history and nature merge in a county full of surprises. Low and flat coastal areas proved irresistible to the elite who dotted the area with fortified castles, while the increasingly mountainous northwest is an outdoor playground with rolling landscapes and picturesque forests.

The distances can be long and take up to 2 hours to drive from one end to the other. Therefore, it is important to stay in a location that is convenient for the Northumberland activities you want to do.

We have divided the area into three sections to help you choose the experience that is right for you. Whether you want to immerse yourself in English history, settle in close to transport links or travel off the beaten path, here is our selection of the best hotels in Northumberland.

The best place to stay in Northumberland for Roman history, forests and green hills.

Hadrian’s Wall stretches for 73 miles from coast to coast along the rolling landscape of Northumberland National Park. Set amidst beautiful rolling hills, glacial lakes and rocky cliffs, it is one of the most beautiful Roman remains in the country. The best-preserved sections of the wall, the most dramatic vantage points, and the most beautiful scenery are found in a relatively compact section at the southern end of Northumberland National Park.

Along with the North Pennines to the south and Kielder Forest to the north, Northumberland National Park is a great base from which to explore Roman history and rolling countryside. This part of Northumberland is surrounded by hills that seem to march north, just like those of the Romans themselves. This part of Northumberland has excellent walking trails, the best Roman museums and soulful craft beer.
